CHICAGO – The National Council for Occupational Safety and Health (National COSH), along with safety and worker advocacy groups, will present an October 31 screening and panel discussion of “A Day’s Work,” a new documentary about safety hazards facing America’s growing population of temporary workers.
What: “A Day’s Work,” documentary about temporary workers. Panel discussion to follow screening
When: Saturday, October 31st, 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm
Where: Univ. of Illinois, Chicago School of Public Health,1603 W. Taylor, Chicago
Co-sponsors of this event include National COSH, Raise the Floor Alliance, ARISE Chicago, Chicago Workers’ Collaborative, UIC School of Public Health, and the Occupational Health and Safety Section of the American Public Health Association (APHA).
The film screening coincides with APHA’s annual meeting, which will bring more than 10,000 public health professionals to Chicago’s McCormick Center from Oct. 31 thru Nov. 4.
“A Day’s Work” tells the tragic story of Day Davis, a temp worker who died on his first day on the job at a Bacardi bottling plant in Florida. His life and death are the focus for a broader narrative about corporate America's strategy to create a disposable workforce with little or no safety protections.
“Day Davis was crushed to death in a bottling machine on his first day at work,” said Jessica Martinez, Active Executive Director of National COSH. “That should never happen. But millions of temp workers are exposed to hazardous conditions every day without proper training, equipment or support.”
The film screening will be followed by a panel discussion with Martinez and Leone José Bicchieri of the Chicago Workers’ Collaborative.
