Safety focus needed in Stimulus Projects: AIHA
The American Industrial Hygiene Association sent a letter to the President, urging him to direct OSHA to ensure that the jobs created by the stimulus package have adequate workplace protections. The AIHA's position echoes that of the National COSH and its affiliates, which have expressed serious concerns about the lack of provisions for mandatory safety training in the federal stimulus bill.
"With 600,000 of these jobs intended for the construction industry and another 400,000 for manufacturing, AIHA believes it is vital that the appropriate number of health and safety professionals is included in this new labor force to protect these new workers," said Lindsay E. Booher, president of the AIHA.
The National COSH has expressed strong support for the President's new Green Jobs programs, but has indicated concern about the serious health and safety hazards that many of the young workers who enter these new jobs are likely to face. (See our section on "Green Jobs/Safe Jobs" for more information.)

OSHA Training for Government Funded Jobs
OSHA 10 or 30 hour training on certain government funded jobs (such as stimulus projects) is now mandatory in six states (NY, MA, NH, RI, CT & MO, and NV is currently pending legislation). Since becoming required by these states, online OSHA training is one of the types of learning that has really taken off. A person may receive their OSHA 10 or 30 hour training card by taking their online OSHA 10 hour training and 30 hour training courses at sites like http://www.osha10hourtraining.com or at http://www.osha30hourtraining.com . They receive quality training accepted by OSHA for online delivery, and receive the same exact OSHA wallet card as if they took the course live. This has really opened the door for many companies who could not justify an on site class due to cost or logistical challenges, and has really helped out individuals who wanted the OSHA training just for themselves. Very economical when compared to on site OSHA training, too.
